Relaxing as you stand

        RELAXING AS YOU STAND
When you're on your feet, relaxation is ten times more difficult because the muscles in your legs and spine have to be tense. And to make matters worse, the dragging, cramping pain of a period seems more intense when you have to stand. You can relax your hands, arms and shoulders of course, and smooth out the wrinkles and stress in your face, but it's a lot more difficult to relax your belly and pelvic floor. Some people find it a help to stand with their legs slightly apart, so that their weight is equally distributed. Others find that standing like this makes the pain worse. If you're in extreme pain and there's nowhere for you to sit, one helpful trick is to rest your hands on any available surface, so that the surface is taking some of your weight, and lean your body slightly forward, arching your back just a little. You can keep your feet in any position that's comfortable. The trick is to direct your weight away from your legs and belly; it gives you breathing space and offloads some of the stress for a while.
If you're on a bus when the pain starts and you have to stand, see if you can lean your weight forward on the rail behind a pair of seats. In a commuter train, it's just about possible to lean against the luggage rack, providing the rack isn't too high or you're not too short. Failing that, try the edge of one of the seats. If you're one of the unlucky people whose work involves them in a lot of standing, see if you can arrange to have a chair somewhere nearby, so that you can take the weight off your feet when it isn't absolutely essential for you to be standing up. You might be pleasantly surprised to find out how much resting time you can sneak this way. Out shopping, it's often less painful to walk on until you either get home or find somewhere to sit down. Incidentally, avoid carrying a lot of heavy shopping all in one bag, treat yourself to a carrier bag and try and redistribute the weight so that you're better balanced. It makes the pain worse if your body is dragged over sideways by a heavy weight, to say nothing of what it's doing to your spine. Better still, see if you can find a friendly shopkeeper who will look after your parcels until you or someone else can collect them and carry them off in comfort—I know how difficult that can be, but you can ask, at least.
